i don't know about you but i'd rather have a grape juice a day than an apple a day. any day. i love grapes. especially the big purple juicy varieties whose succulent skin i can keep chewing on long after i've sucked out the juice.
i've always wondered if grape juice packed in the same health benefits as wine. i recently came across an article on cnn.com aptly titled "wine or welch's?" which answered this very question.
a quick summary of the article is that you can get the same health benefits of red wine from grape juice. in fact, grape juice might actually be better. flavanoids, the antioxidants which fight the bad cholestrol, are present in both red wine and red grape juice. but grape juice is better in that it lowers the risk of developing blood clots that cause heart-attacks without having to consume alcohol. red wine can also lower the risk but only when consumed at quantities which will actually label you as legally drunk!
the one thing that really surprised me in the article is that drinking grape juice is better than eating grapes. this is apparently because the juice includes the seeds which are super rich in flavanoids. this was counter to what i've always read about fruit being healthier than fruit juice!

Depending on how the fruit is juiced, the juice is healthier - when eating the fruit often the seeds, layers of the peel etc are thrown out, but if the whole fruit is juiced, the juice contains the fiber+nutrients of those parts too.
Well, the obvious advantages of Red Wine are -
1) More easily available, especially at restaurants and bars
2) Contains alcohol, which always makes drinking it more pleasant :-)
